
John Tyree is a freelance percussionist and teacher, originally from small-town Kentucky. Known for his versatility as a musician, he brings with him years of experience performing in contemporary, classical, jazz, rock, marching, and world music settings.
As a performer John has played with So Percussion, members of the SilkRoad Ensemble, the Commonwealth Lyric Opera, the North End Performing Arts Center, and the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra. His passion as a musician lies in collaboration, having worked with many different ensembles, composers, and artists including Sound Icon, David Crowell, Ben Levin, Bent Knee, and many others.
As a teacher, John has spent the past seven years teaching percussion at high schools across the country, most recently serving as the Percussion Director for Weiss High School. Through his work he has earned a reputation for his ability to work with students at all levels, from beginning to advanced.
In addition to working as a musician, John also served as an Undergraduate Research Fellow for three years with his research projects A History of Electroacoustic Percussion Solo Repertoire, Studies in Neo-Romantic Marimba Literature, and an award-winning collaborative project Experiments in Sympathetic Vibrations and Percussion Composition.
John is a graduate of Morehead State University (BME ’17) and Boston Conservatory at Berklee (MM ’19), formerly a student of Dr. Brian Mason, Doug Perkins, Nancy Zeltsman, Samuel Solomon, and Kyle Brightwell.
John currently serves as an Assistant Director for Marble Falls ISD, in addition to being an active videographer and sound engineer as co-founder of GreenBox Media with fellow percussionist Nick Stevens.
